Number of footswitches
This is one of the most important features to consider because it affects how you will use the looper and what you will be able to do with it. Loops are created and controlled with footswitches, so generally speaking the more footswitches a looper has, the more control you will have.
The Ditto is an example of a looper with only one footswitch. This means functions such as record, play, stop, overdub and erase are all controlled with one footswitch. For example to record, you tap the footswitch once. To stop playback, you double-tap. To erase the loop, you hold the footswitch down. There are only so many functions that can be fit into one footswitch. While the Ditto can still do a lot, many guitarists find the single footswitch a big limitation.

Pedals and switches are essentially used to utilize different features of the looper. Many pedals only have a single pedal which is fine in most scenarios but when you are live on stage it would be very difficult to move different dials to stop or play some loops. So with more pedals it becomes easier to switch between loops and make use of the many features. It is very useful for a multilayered loop.
Luckily enough, even on a single pedal looper pedal you have the option to add additional pedals. This way you get the same capabilities as you would with a looper with built in multiple pedals. It is quite easy to do that but keep in mind you will have to spend some more money on the additional switches/pedals. In case you believe you will need multiple pedals then it makes sense to get the one with multiple pedals rather than buying single one and purchasing more later.
Value For Money
If the criterion for you is value for money, it would not be that difficult to find one. Most of these pedals especially those that are rather simplistic, are cheap and offer good value. The TC Electronic Guitar Ditto Looper is a great product that is high quality and reasonably priced.
What it offers is what you can also find in high end pedals but this cost much lesser. You have qualities like true by pass and analog dry through. Also you can do unlimited undo/redos making it very useful for all styles.

These types of pedals can give you a sample of all of the amps and effects that are available, and if you like the effect, you can always decide to get another pedal that is specifically designed for that effect.
It is a great option that gives you the pedal options that you have not been able to afford to purchase, and it gives you a backup in case your regular pedal dies on you during a gig. It will most likely come with tuners, loopers, and a headphone jack so that you can plug in and practice anywhere.
TC Electronic Ditto X2
TC Electronic introduced the original Ditto looper as a compact solution for simple rhythm and lead playing. Its multi-functioning single footswitch acts as a record, overdub, stop, undo and redo button. For the more adventurous types, TC Electronic released the bigger brother to the Ditto family called the XWith the added “FX” footswitch, users can assign reverse, half-speed or a stop button with a flick of a switch.

Most multi-effects pedals have an interface that is easy to figure out, but since it can house a lot of different sound effect options, it can be rather complex.
There are a lot more buttons, knobs, and settings that you need to adjust on a multi-effects pedal. In addition, the pedal effects may be plentiful, but they may not be as high quality as a single effect pedal.
The other concern of mine was, what if the multi-effects pedal breaks? If you are going to a gig, all of your effects will be kaput, unless you have some single effect pedals on hand as well.

Luckily, with a bit of time, you can easily adjust the interface settings to accommodate your needs in a matter of minutes. I do not like the interface that is available for making live adjustments, but you may feel differently about it.
Insofar as the sound that this pedal produces, it is simply amazing. The only other issue that I had with this multi-effects board is that the pedal is a bit small. It works perfectly for my small foot, but anyone who has a larger shoe size may have issues centering their foot on the pedal.

The Zoom G1Xon is a great multi-effects pedal for beginners. It is loaded with functionality that any guitarist would love, and it will save you a lot of money in the long run. The case is durable and able to withstand a lot of abuse.
There are about 100 different effect options that you can choose to use on this device, and each of them gives you a unique sound that you can tweak to your needs.
I love that the reverb option on the pedal does not limit you to a single reverb setting; in fact, there are about ten levels of reverb that you can select from to get the exact sound that you want.
The looper only gives you a 30-second playback, but for the price, I would say it is still acceptable. The interface and preset options on this unit are extremely customizable, but upon first look, it can be a bit intimidating to find the settings that you are looking for.
The unit does come with a built-in tuner, but it does not come with a power supply so before you check out with this multi-effects pedal, purchase one so that you are not limited to battery power.
Wrapping it Up
As a guitarist, having a way to easily vary the sound that you create with a multi-effects pedal is a great value. If you do not have any pedals to create unique sounds, a multi-effects pedal is going to be the best option to help you get started.

Generally speaking, the longer the loop time available, the better, unless you are the type that gets distracted into fiddling instead of being productive. Some pedals have more than enough loop time to record parts for entire albums, but some have considerably lower memory. This is definitely a specification to watch out for.
Essential controls include record, play, overdub and stop – all of which should be accessible via footswitches for handsfree control. Other controls that are nifty include undo, redo and bypass. Single pedal units will obviously have less switches and buttons, which makes them easy to setup and use. Multi-track loopers allow for more loops and in depth control – which include adding effects, auto quantize, syncing, time adjustments and many more.
